This company began around 1800, when local nobleman Lord Sandys decided to attempt to imitate a sauce he had tried in Bengal. Employing chemists John Lea and William Perrins, the two made an unsavory sauce and abandoned the leftover jars in a basement. When the chemists went back to try the sauce years later, they had discovered the aging process gave the sauce
